Question 1

How accurate is the SalarySavvy freelancer rate calculator?

Accepted Answer

SalarySavvy benchmarks are modeled, not surveyed. Each skill has a baseline hourly rate for a remote US freelancer, set from public freelance rate guides and platform rate ranges, and each location applies a cost-of-living multiplier to that baseline. Treat the result as a starting point for your own pricing, not a guarantee of what a client will pay. Baselines were last reviewed in April 2026.

Question 2

How often is the rate data updated?

Accepted Answer

Baseline rates and location multipliers are reviewed periodically against public rate guides and platform rate ranges. The current set was last reviewed in April 2026.

Question 3

How should I use the rate calculator results?

Accepted Answer

Use the calculator results as a starting point for negotiations. Consider the benchmark rate, adjust for your experience level, and factor in your unique value proposition. The results help you set competitive rates while ensuring fair compensation for your expertise.

Question 4

I'm new to freelancing. How do I set my initial rates?

Accepted Answer

For new freelancers, we recommend starting at the lower end of the benchmark range for your skill and location, then gradually increasing rates as you gain experience and build your portfolio. Focus on delivering exceptional value to justify rate increases.

Question 5

How do I handle clients who say my rates are too high?

Accepted Answer

Use data from SalarySavvy to justify your rates with market benchmarks. Communicate the value you provide, showcase your expertise and past results, and be willing to walk away from clients who don't value your work appropriately.

Question 6

Should I charge different rates for different types of projects?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it's common to have different rates based on project complexity, timeline urgency, client relationship, and the specialized skills required. Value-based pricing can often result in higher earnings than hourly rates alone.

Question 7

How do location and remote work affect freelance rates?

Accepted Answer

Location significantly impacts rates - major tech hubs typically command higher rates. However, remote work has somewhat equalized this, allowing freelancers in lower-cost areas to charge rates closer to major markets while still maintaining competitive advantages.

Question 8

How do I track market trends to stay competitive?

Accepted Answer

SalarySavvy provides trend data showing rate changes over time. Check the calculator quarterly to see how your rates compare to current market conditions, and adjust your pricing strategy accordingly to stay competitive.

Question 9

What factors most influence freelance rates?

Accepted Answer

The most influential factors are: specialized skills and expertise, years of experience, geographic location or target market, industry sector, project complexity, and current market demand for your skills.

Question 10

How do I raise my rates with existing clients?

Accepted Answer

Give clients advance notice (typically 30-60 days), justify the increase with improved skills and market data, emphasize the value you've delivered, and be professional and confident in your communication.

Question 11

What's the difference between hourly and project-based pricing?

Accepted Answer

Hourly pricing charges for time spent and provides predictable income, while project-based pricing charges for deliverables and can result in higher earnings if you work efficiently. Many freelancers use a combination of both.

Question 12

How do I account for taxes and business expenses in my rates?

Accepted Answer

Factor in self-employment taxes (typically 15.3% in the US), business expenses like software and equipment, health insurance, retirement savings, and unpaid time including vacation and sick days. A good rule of thumb is to multiply your desired salary by 1.5-2x.

Question 13

How does SalarySavvy compare to other rate calculators?

Accepted Answer

SalarySavvy offers benchmarks reviewed periodically, location-specific rates for global markets, comprehensive skill coverage across 20+ categories, trend analysis showing rate changes over time, and is completely free to use with no registration required.

Question 14

How important is my resume and professional presentation in commanding higher rates?

Accepted Answer

SalarySavvy has not measured this, so treat it as craft advice rather than a benchmark: a resume or portfolio that states quantifiable results, relevant expertise and checkable references gives a client something concrete to price against. The rate benchmarks on this site model skill and location only — they do not model presentation.
